$200 million allocated over 20 years to three Upper Basin Tribes.
The Department of the Interior hosted the ceremonial signing of a historic agreement this month, wherein the United States agreed to support a Tribal-led conservation plan to reintroduce salmon to their historic habitats in the Upper Basin of the Colorado River. The ceremony was attended by dozens of officials from President Biden’s administration along with leaders of the Colville Reservation, the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, and the Spokane Tribe.
In addition to handing leadership of this project over to Tribal leaders, the Interior Department agreed to fund 20 years of these conservation efforts with a total of $200 million.
“Since time immemorial, Tribes along the Columbia River System have relied on Pacific salmon, steelhead, and other native fish species for sustenance and their cultural and spiritual ways of life,” said Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland. “Today’s historic agreement is integral to helping restore healthy and abundant fish populations to these communities.”
